1a - How to Listen to Music in this Course

Okay so I ran the audio test. Through $10 (US) Phillips headphones purchased from a drugstore I hear from about 30 Hz to 8.762 Khz. Through 10+ year old Cambridge Soundworks 2+1 computer speakers I heard from 37 Hz to 10.787 Khz. Also nice to see both headphones and speakers gave similar results. I have some assurance I can listen either way and hear about the same thing.

I hope you'll agree that is not bad for a 63 year old man. The high frequency side was better than I expected.

I tested several speakers, headphones and earbuds. I didn't notice difference on the range, could hear from 20~24 Hz until around 17500 Hz, when the sound completely fades for me.

I say this in a vein of jest; but just for the heck of it, try to Google "Pinned" and let me know what you come up with! I don't know about you but I am here to learn about music production techniques not to learn obscure interpretations of common and not so common words that are tosses out by a website techy.

Hi,

I tried the earphone test and I was able to hear from about 3 seconds to about 1:35 with a pair of Sennheiser HD 558. I originally bought them because the sound was good and they were very comfortable, but I'm a little disappointed that I wasn't able to hear the range that others did.

I'm wondering how much our ears factor into this test. I'm 49, and perhaps my hearing isn't as good as others. I wonder if someone who has the same pair of headphones got the same results that I did.

Interesting stuff. Since bass is my primary instrument, I do operate in the 24 > 100 Hz. My monitors aren't that good at reproducing those pure frequencies. Not to worry. I can mix low stuff using headphones if need be.

I also have a spot of tinnitus which operates around 14-16KHz. Never had a formal diagnosis as it's just an annoyance. I 'self diagnosed' the frequency damage using an on-line test which compares the hearing of young people with adults.

Moral of the story is, people, protect and love your hearing!

This video loses less in the upper frequencies at HD resolutions:

YouTube still compresses audio noticeably at 480p, which is what the video in the OP maxes out at.

These videos recently let me discover that I've lost a noticeable amount of high end in my left ear in the last year My left drops off completely at 13.7kHz, while my right still gets up to 15.5ish.

My desktop speakers (Trust Tytans) appear to have a range of 65Hz to just over 14kHz, while my headphones (Sony MDR ZX600) go from 36Hz to just over 14kHz. Headphones will be necessary for low-end mixing then

With my Radio Shack Extreme headphones I can hear from 40Hz to 20kHz.

The Vi Hart video, as all of her videos, was fun and educational.

Heard from 34 Hz to approx. 13,000 kHz on the second video on my Altec Lansing desktop computer speakers.

The frequencies got annoying around 4000 my ears started to die but this was very intresting how the ears cannot pick up on lower an higher frequencies an sometimes when it got to a certain point only 1 of my ears could hear it then it went back to both i found this intresting

This is one of the best videos I've watched on the science behind sound. Likening it to a swing is brilliant. Training for production in radio, they used the waves in the ocean as an example.
EG: When one collides with the back of another, if the timing is off, the wave doesn't push it forward harder and faster, it tends to collapse in on itself, much the same way as the swing example. A brilliant start!
